NYC Energy Efficiency Audits

Bloomberg News (12/9, Goldman) reported that “New York City will require owners of large buildings to conduct ‘energy efficiency audits’ every 10 years and maintain their properties in a way that conserves energy, under a law approved by the City Council.” In addition, “city-owned buildings are required to retrofit heating and cooling systems when energy savings can recoup the costs within seven years.” New York also will require that “large buildings ‘benchmark’ energy and water consumption every year” to “help owners reduce energy use and save money.”

The AP (12/10) reports that the New York City Council voted to pass a package of bills Wednesday that are “intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings, which are the city’s largest source of heat-trapping gases.” The legislation includes “a requirement that owners of buildings larger than 50,000 square feet conduct energy audits once every 10 years and make environmental ‘tuneups,’” as well as “the city’s first energy code for buildings.” Mayor Michael Bloomberg says that “it will help achieve his goal of reducing the city’s carbon count by 30 percent by 2030,” while environmental groups said that the legislation will “put New York City ahead of the rest of the nation on green buildings.”
